Why do I have to keep resetting SMC?

Over the last few months I think I've had to reset the SMC on my Mac at least every 2 weeks, sometimes once a week. I know I have to do it becasue all of a sudden the battery will stop charging or it will say it's charging when not even plugged in. Does anyone know why this keeps happening? Thanks.

Contact Apple Support, as your Mac might have a hardware problem.

Agree with @MrHoffman, you most likely have a hardware issue with the laptop. My guess is the battery has a hardware failure. I've seen a few batteries indicate a charging status even without a power adapter connected and it was due to a failing battery.
