Continuous duplication of Outlook contacts in Apple Contacts

I tried to link outlook contacts with my apple contacts. I am now getting a continuous stream of duplicates appearing in Contacts. I am up to 20000 contacts. There are 10 to 15 duplicates of each contact

I cant remember what steps I took to create the issue
