Apple ID authentication failure for Messages and FaceTime on MacBook

Start Messages. Get prompted to log in.

After entering log-in information, Messages appears to start, but the Settings shows that it is still trying to Sign in. It eventually fails, and goes back to the above screen.

For FaceTime, similar behaviour. Log in, wait and application goes goes back to log-in prompt.

  • Internet connection is fine. I've tried on two different networks. All other apps working fine.
  • Verified, changed and re-verified my Apple ID and password.
  • Logged our and in. Reset computer.
  • Date and Time are accurate.
  • No updates available for MacOS Ventura (13.7.8)
  • Reset NVPRM (twice).

I also tried the same operations in Safe Mode, with the same results.

This seems to be a common problem, but I don't see any resolutions in various communities.

I also see a few other funnies happening. In iOS Messages (which still works), I see people's Apple ID for a few seconds before it switches to the full name in my Contacts. Nothing's broken, but it's different behaviour. I also found that my Notes took a long time to load, this morning. I'm not sure if it's related to iCloud changes.

Another thing I tried was to delete the application passwords in Keychain for the two applications. The entries were re-created by the apps and they still don't work.

Two things I have not tried are:

  1. delete anything called 'Messages' or 'FaceTime' in Library. These files could be strewn about and I might not get whatever could be corrupt.
  2. Reload the OS, which is rather draconian for two apps. Even still, the problem could be on Apple's side, with their representation of my iCloud Account.

Is it possible that Apple discontinued support for Messages and FaceTime in Ventura (13.7.8) on Sunday.

iOS works fine, but I'm on the current version, there.

It turns out that I was flagged for spamming by Apple. I found a separate thread about it, least week. It seems to be a common thing.

I contacted Apple Support, who sent me a link to re-activate my account. It is possible that someone flagged me erroneously, but 99% of my messages go to my wife (who has me in Contacts) and my mother. I'm thinking that the 'Delete and Report Junk' function, which notifies my carrier (who does nothing) and Apple, both, may be mine things up.
