I have myself and 4 kids in my Apple family.
I am unable to invite my wife to the family and as far as I can tell you can share with 5 other members.
the invite button is dulled out.
If I can only have 5 members totally where is the clarification of that?

The limit is 6 members, which is you and 5 others. Make sure you did not inadvertently prevent Account Changes on your account at Settings > Screen Time > Content & Privacy > Account Changes.
