How can I fix crackling audio in Apple TV app on macOS?

TV app on Mac is becoming unusable: consistent, serious audio out of sync and crackling. No other app or video streaming service is affected: Netflix, Amazon Prime, Disney+, Youtube, etc. all play fine: it is the Apple TV app that is broken. It's driving me nuts.

MacOS and TV app are up to date and have been restarted multiple times.

Broken for you maybe, not everyone. The first thing to try is restarting your MacBook in Safe Mode. Safe Mode performs a series of maintenance routines and also does a quick check of your storage device. Safe Mode also blocks the loading of third party extensions, plugins, etc. If the problem goes away in Safe Mode then restart in normal mode and test.

Start up your Mac in safe mode - Apple Support

You can also try restarting your internet modem and WiFi router. While other streaming apps are working fine the Apple TV app may be affected while others are not. Worth a try.

clearly i’m not speaking for everyone and obviously i want help! so thank you for your suggestions. i didn’t mention it but i’ve already restarted the router etc. and that’s had no effect. i’ll try Safe Mode and report back. thanks for your help.
