How can I pause syncing of photos on iPhone with iCloud.

I am currently using iOS 18.6.2 on my iPhone. In the past, after taking a picture, I can scroll down to the bottom of the photo library, and there would be an option for me to temporarily pause uploading of photos to the iCloud. This is especially useful when I am out in the field without any Wi-Fi access, and do not want to waste my cellular data uploading the photos and videos I am taking. However, I cannot seem to find this pause feature anymore. Did they take this very useful feature away, or hopefully, has it just been relocated? If it has been taken away, can anyone suggest a workaround? Thank you.

Generally, an iPhone won't sync when bandwidth is narrow. It will wait to be plugged in with good wifi and no one bothering it. There is a button to tell it to stop pausing and resume syncing even though it wouldn't normally.

Since in iOS18 the bottom of the Library is no longer at the bottom of the screen, and we now can move sections around where we want them, this function has been moved to the Apple Account ID icon in the upper right of the screen:

There's some other stuff in there for easy access, as well. I had completely lost "Shared with You"

I think I have found the answer - you can only stop syncing while iCloud is actually syncing, which can happen pretty quickly.

To illustrate, I took a photo and then immediately went to the photo library app and clicked on the Apple Account ID button. I then got the same screen Richard showed in his reply, saying that I am “Synced to iCloud”. This is where I got stuck earlier because there is no action button to do anything.

However, a few seconds later that message is replaced with one saying “Syncing X items to iCloud” (where X is the number of new items that have not synced, like the picture I just took). More importantly, it is followed by a blue “Pause” button!

When I press the pause button, another message comes up asking “Pause Syncing with iCloud until tonight?” along with a second “Pause” button.

When you confirm with the second pause button, -Voila!- your syncing is paused, and you get the new message: “Syncing paused for X Items”. More importantly, there is also a blue “Resume” button that allows you to come back later to continue syncing if you don’t want to wait until that evening.

This is great news for me. Sorry I was so verbose - I couldn’t load the actual screenshots so I had to describe them. Also, thanks for the tip, Richard. I hope Apple will make it easier in the future to allow for pausing of the sync feature (like it was in the past)!

Actually, I said, "There is a button to tell it to stop pausing." I failed to mention that it says, "Resume." As you saw from my picture, the normal message is "Synced Just Now."

I"m glad you've worked it out!

As I said earlier, when you on cellular, the iPhone probably won't sync on cellular, unless you tell it to. If it says "Synced Just Now" then it's not using wifi or cellular.

The problem is that the “Pause” button only appears while the iPhone is actively syncing. If I were to go into the photo album right now and go to the accounts page, I would likely catch it when nothing is happening and all you see is “Synced with iCloud right now”. There is no “Pause” button for me to stop any further syncing. That button only shows up when the iPhone is actively syncing with the iCloud.

Sigh. It would be so easy for Apple to put in a “Pause” button that is available all the time - which was how it was in earlier versions of iOS. Why they took it away I have no idea.
