iOS predictive text is so aggressive after iOS 18.6.2 update

Since the most recent iOS update, predictive text has become overly aggressive -- it is making mistakes it did not previously make, such as "your" becomes "you're" when you put a space after the "r", it starts autocompleting words I haven't finished typing yet, resulting in repeated letters at the ends of words or garbage words entirely due to it choosing a different word than I was trying to type. Or another fun alternative is that it will treat each letter I type as the start of a new word resulting in something akin to beat poetry.

In the past I have found predictive text useful as a way to help me spell words I have struggled with pre-emptively, but I think I will have to turn it off entirely as it takes three times as long to write anything because I have to continually go back and correct it. I also have manual dexterity issues, so both predictive text and autocorrect when working properly can be extremely useful assistance devices.

I am using an English (Australian) default language setting, but the predictions it makes are not typically related to local usage.

I am seeing the mostly on an iPhone 14 Pro running a fully patched operating system, currently 18.6.2. I am experiencing this in multiple apps, including Message, Reddit, Discord, and Safari.

Hi Felinae, I'm so sorry to hear that! You can try these steps to improve predictive text besides completely turning it off:

  1. Reset your Keyboard Dictionary, since aggressive or incorrect suggestions often stem from learned mistakes.
  • Navigate to Settings > General > Transfer or Reset iPhone > Reset > Reset Keyboard Dictionary.

2. Use text replacements to override certain words/corrections that keep misbehaving (for example "your" always becomes "you're)

  • Go to Settings > General > Keyboard > Text Replacement
  • Set the Phrase to the correct word (for example, your) and the Shortcut to the mistaken autocorrect (for example, you're)

3. For additional support, you can see this Apple Support article: How to use Auto-Correction and predictive text on your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch - Apple Support

Hope this helps!

I understand what you are saying about learned mistakes - it has only started doing this since the most recent OS update, and many of the 'suggestions' it is making are not words I have previously typed, or at least not with any degree of frequency.

The your/you're change is something that context clues should pick up as an error, and I really don't know any other way to type "your " that doesn't require a space after the "r", which is the default trigger for predictive text.

Are you suggesting I need to block words on an individual basis if it is always substituting a longer word when the shorter word is the one I want to use? That doesn't sound like a helpful use of an assistive tool.

Hi again Felinae!

This issue likely stems from Apple’s new predictive text model in the recent iOS update, which is more aggressive than before. Try toggling Predictive, Auto-Correction, and Smart Punctuation off and back on in Settings > General > Keyboard, and reset the keyboard dictionary to clear any learned errors.

If the errors keep happening, testing a third-party keyboard like Gboard can confirm whether it’s Apple’s predictive engine I’d also report the issue to Apple via Feedback Assistant or their Accessibility Support line so they can patch it. Until then, text replacements can help override the worst substitutions like “your” and “you’re.”
