Updating to 14.7.7 ... or 14.7.8?

I am preparing to upgrade my iMac from Monterey to Sonoma.

Currently Sonoma 14.7.7 is available in the App Store. But when I checked Terminal softwareupdate --list-full-installers, there is a 14.7.8 version that was released two weeks ago (Aug. 20) - but that version doesn't appear in the App Store.

Is this difference just that the App Store hasn't been updated yet, or is 14.7.8 something I should avoid downloading for the time being? (I'd rather not have to do 2 successive macOS upgrades/updates if I can avoid it.)

There is no need for concern if you would prefer to wait for the App Store update... unless of course you are one of those specific targeted individuals.

Or, just wait for Tahoe, assuming your iMac is toward the latter end of the iMac (2017 – 2020) period: OS - macOS Tahoe 26 - Apple

  1. Both update versions include important security
  • macOS Sonoma 14.7.8 includes a critical security path addressing an ImageIO vulnerability (potential exploit via a malicious image file that could lead to memory corruption)
  • Prior 14.7.7 update also delivered important security fixes

2. The command you were seeing was due to the terminal showing it first, before the App Store did.

  • Apple often makes new full installers (like 14.7.8) available via Terminal before they propagate through the App Store or System Settings. The softwareupdate--list-full-installers command reflects this early availability, which is why you're seeing 14.7.8 there but not in the App Store yet.

Hope this helps!

Without revealing certain info ... What I have seen ... The numbering be a Full Point update

Actually, the existing numbering gives me pause.

It occurred to me overnight that the current beta is 14.7.8 RC5. Wouldn't that mean that 14.7.8 (what appears in softwareupdate --list-full-installers) is a beta release? I wouldn't expect 14.7.8 RC5 to be renumbered as 14.9. That would be inconsistent numbering.

It would appear to me that 14.7.7 is the actual current gold release. I agree there is no urgency to upgrading my iMac right now.

Depending on your patience and needs to upgrade to Sonoma. You may hold off a bit longer. There maybe a subsequent update to version 14.7.8 looming on the horizon

Well, that's presents a bit of a conundrum. I know there's a 14.7.8 RC5 beta that was released last week, and I suppose it would go general release the same time as Tahoe. Despite my desire not to do 2 successive updates, I am cautious enough not to install updates right after they are released. I downloaded 14.7.8 but haven't installed it yet. I think I'll wait a few more days.

My 2019 i9 iMac is eligible up to Sequoia but I am not ready to migrate that far right now. And it's not on the Tahoe compatibility list.
