Refurbished iPhone SE with locked Touch ID and anti-theft function

Okay—here’s the scoop: I bought from Walmart this past May, a Refurbished, fully unlocked iPhone SE (3rd generation).

Went through steps to transfer data from my old iPhone 7. Able to use partially operational iPhone SE, except I finally learned that the Touch ID is actually locked under prior owner’s finger touch. Which led me to try to work with the anti theft function. Of course, it’s another dead end because it also requires the prior owner’s Touch ID. I am beyond disappointed with the fact that Walmart sold me this phone online without verification that these functions were completely cleared before shipping it to me. I have done chat and called Walmart Customer Service—I always get someone overseas. They won’t transfer me to a rep in the USA. I cannot use my Smart watch, use my banking apps, Apple Pay and more. Plus I bought the extended phone warranty with Allstate, sold through Walmart. I even sent a notification to the seller through the Walmart website, promising me that I should have received a reply within 48 hours—that’s a joke. No feedback from the seller. Even the emails I received from Walmart are looking sketchy…thinking they’re from overseas Walmart Customer Service. This has become a huge mess without anyone resolving my problem. In the meantime, I’m left with a faulty phone and a useless warranty. I’m not sure what to do next. I’ve gone online for tutorials with Apple, etc. as well as calling Apple customer service—no luck. I don’t want to end up paying more for Apple repair than what I already paid for this phone. Not only that, I don’t know if they’d help me with the seller’s Touch ID still locked.

Recycle the phone and go buy one from a legitimate authorized retailer or directly from Apple.

I'm willing to bet money that the phone you bought was not actually sold by Walmart but came from a 3rd party seller. Walmart is getting as bad as Amazon and eBay any more when it comes to the actual source of the products available to purchase from their online store.

Either way, it's undoubtedly been too long for you to do anything about it.

Walmart is getting as bad as Amazon and eBay…

That's for sure! And so is Best Buy. You really have to look to see where an item is actually coming from. On their web sites, it used to be only here and there. But now fully half, if not more of the items listed originate from a third party reseller.

Why places like Amazon and Best Buy even allow a third party seller on their own site boggles the mind. I get that they get a cut of the sale for doing essentially nothing to earn it, but it sure doesn't help their reputation.

When I sold off all of my higher end Nikon gear (D800, lenses, etc.) to get the smaller Z50, I saw what looked like a really good deal on Best Buy for the bundle you could find just about anywhere. But I also saw the very small notice that it was coming from some other seller. That prompted me to look at the reviews of people who had purchased it. Items missing, obviously used, not working. And in all cases, the seller wouldn't return emails or calls, much less do anything about the issues.

I think I read Amazon has over a million 3rd party vendors. I just had to return 2 3rd party items that arrived damaged, and both went very smoothly, so they seem to have things under control

I haven't had to return too many things. Sadly, the things I do remember having to return were a desk and a desk chair. The desk was the wrong size (my fault entirely) but the chair was defective. In both cases, the returns were pretty easy from the paperwork standpoint. Schlepping them to UPS was a whole other thing. The replacement chair arrived promptly.
