"Attachment" is usually just a general term that means that there is a file attached to the text in the email. An attachment might have a format extension of ".doc," or ".pdf," or ".jpg," etc. So an attachment might be named "Snoopy.doc" or "Snoopy.jpg," for instance. The first is a Word document, and the second is a picture. Attachment doesn't mean anything special.

No files should have a format extension of ".attachment."

How you see this listed may depend on the email system.

Any of these things can be caused by the email system at either end. Servers don't like large emails taking up bandwidth, so they set up limits on number of pictures, size, and so on. They also don't like being accused if invading privacy, so they may limit the metadata. And the person sending an email may choose to strip the metadata, or they may have it done without knowing. Exporting a picture in Photos, for instance, gives these options:

and others.

If the sender wants to circumvent some of these limits, you might ask them to compress the files into a ".zip" package. When I've tried that, the email filters didn't know what was inside, so they ignored it. But if there's a megabyte limit, then you have to find another way.
