I'm going on a trip at the end of September and would like to buy the iPhone 16 Pro Max, but it will be after the release of the iPhone 17 when the 16 Pro and Pro Max lines will be discontinued. Is there any way I can pre-order the iPhone 16 Pro Max so they can keep it and I can buy it?

Apple has never, at least to my knowledge, kept a pro model available in Apple Stores or online from Apple after the launch of the newest pro model. The non-pro models tend to remain buying options. But not the pro models.

You’d have to work-out this sort of “special arrangement” w/ the manager of the particular store.
You can still buy the iPhone 15 and 15 Plus new from Apple, but you cannot buy the 15 Pro or 15 Pro Max new from them. Apple discontinued those phones when the 16-series phones came out.
You can't pre-order an iPhone 16 Pro Max because it was released almost a year ago.
You can buy one off the shelf right now if you want.
It's very possible new models may be announced next week...
