Should I keep or trade my MacBook Pro 2019 with security updates ending soon?

I just purchased MacBook Air 15" M4 2025, 16GB, 512GB storage to replace my MacBook Pro 2019, 16" 2.3 GHz 8-core Intel i9, 16 GB, 1T storage, which within 12 months will no longer receive security updates from Apple. My original plan was to trade in the MacBook Pro for $200, but now I'm wondering if there is a good reason I should hold on to it?

The converse of your question would imply the lack of macOS updates is reason to get rid of it, which lacks justification. Apple has continued to provide XProtect updates for Macs at least a decade older than that one. The most recent update was issued yesterday morning.

I believe you are confusing macOS updates with security updates.

Getting $200 in trade toward a new Mac isn't a bad deal though, and I would consider it because that offer isn't going to last. Intel Macs are certainly becoming obsolete, but lack of security updates is a different subject altogether.

depends how how much you need that 200 bucks...I can say trade-ins seem to have funny a way of downgrading the original offer once the machine is received by these third party contractors...YMMV.

just like the old adage for Software—

If you value your user data 3-2-1 Backup Strategy: three copies of your data, two different methods, and one offsite. More than one device, more than one backup methodology.

Hardware—

nice to have a backup hardware if for some reason you have a catastrophic failure or loss of your new purchase.

The old Mac might not be up to date, but would allow you reach out as a contingency plan...at no extra cost.

Really depends on if you think you’ll use it. FYI, a 2019 16” MBP will run the upcoming macOS 26 Tahoe. Security updates are typically provided for the two prior versions of macOS, so you’re looking at 3 years of security updates for your old Mac going forward.

It’s really your call as to the desire for a backup Mac. We have 6 Macs in our house, so I do keep a ‘spare’ Mac in case someone’s fails or is lost. Setting up from a TM backup is easy.

I recently traded in a 2019 16” i9 1 TB MBPs, value was $275 on an Apple gift card.
