Advice needed on how to secure and backup a photography archive
Hi,
I currently use a MacBookPro M1 Max, 2021, 64gb memory, 4TB storage and an apple studio display 27". OS 15.5
I'm a photographer and not very technologically inclined, unfortunately.
A techie guy, also a photographer, I know set me up with a Drobo 5 bay raid as my working archive and a yottamaster 5 bay backup for this, as well as a Backblaze cloud backup. I used to have an iMac in my office and a MacBook Pro for travel/location jobs etc. but just use the MBP now as advised by the techie guy. I feel a bit vulnerable as if the MBP is stolen, breaks etc. I'm stuck, but he said then you just buy a new one and back it up.
The Drobo power failed a couple of times (somewhat freaking me out the first time) and then it did fail. It had not enough extra storage left, even though it said it had 5TB in the dashboard.
If anyone could advise of a good way to proceed I would be grateful as I am not very techie - I have tried talking to people in the Apple Store but not had any helpful suggestions.
I now am using the yottamaster backup as my archive - which has 5x16tb drives, raid 5 and I need a new DAS (was thinking of an OWC 8 bay one, but can't seem to buy an enclosure without drives - I was going to reuse the drives from the Drobo). In the meantime I have another yottmaster enclosure which I want to set up to mirror the main archive, but don't know how to prepare the Drobo drives to make a raid 5 array and can't find anything online which addresses this.
My questions are
- Is RAID 5 sensible? I saw an apple expert somewhere saying how it was really not a good idea and gave a complicated reason which I could not understand for this
- Is the 2 physical raids a good way to go?
- Is it possible to buy an OWC enclosure in the UK on its own?
- How should I prepare the HDDs for the new raid (firstly the yottamaster backup and then OWC if I can get it) ?
- My adviser told me to just use a MacBookPro for everything - is this more sensible than having a machine in the office eg iMac, or Studio or even Mac mini?
Thank you, in advance. Cheers, Nick
