Tens of thousands of non-existent messages in iCloud Message backup

I’ve only got a handful of messages but there are apparently tens of thousands of message filling up my backup. On none of my devices do these messages exist but they’re still occupying my backup space. Is the fix to simply deselect the message from being backed up and let the sync occur to remove the bloat from my iCloud? Then after they’ve been removed check message backup again to restore the few conversations that I still have and use?

Messages Taking Up Space:

Only 1.3GB of data is Messages --the rest is for Photos, and such. Tap See All> in the Saved to iCoud pane to see which app(s) take up the most storage.

New iCloud Session:

Log out of iCloud on this. Then, log back in.

"Thank you for the reply. Is there a way for me to manually delete some or all of my messages that are currently filling up my iCloud storage space?: From what I have read on various sources the only way is to turn it off and wait 1 month for the iCloud space to be freed?"
