That should not be happening, unless one of you does not have an internet connection on the iPhone, either Wi-Fi or cellular data based. In those cases, it will default to the carrier powered RCS messaging when sending media or complex messages but will use SMS for simple texts without formatting or features. But this should only be the exception, not the norm.
When we text other people with iPhones, it uses iMessage. It's been happening for years. Any idea how to fix this?
That's the way it's expected to work, so nothing to fix. iMessage will be used between iPhones with active internet connections and iMessage turned on.
iMessage is much more robust than RCS and it will be preferred when an internet connection is available for both devices.
RCS also needs to be supported by both carriers. It's still an emerging option and is limited in certain areas.
There's no reason to want to use RCS unless you are messaging Android devices. iMessage is much more secure and robust.
