I updated the OS and the wifi does not recognise any networks after that.

what version macOS?
generic advice would be to use the controls at the bottom of the Networks pane to ADD an interface, choose Wi-Fi (if available) and it should be added back to the list, where it can be configured for your use.
If not available, you may have some incompatible add-ons or a hardware issue. Post back and Readers can help you with that.

Did someone else set this Mac up for you?
MacBook Pro from 2012 is approved to run, at most, Catalina, MacOS 10.15.
do you have a Wi-Fi Icon on the MenuBar, even if you can't add a new Network?
if yes, did you try choosing OTHER wireless network?
