Okay, I can get to it through Finder, but where to I get the icon back, the one that visually lets me know that I'm connected on my desktop? How do I get that back?

MacBook Pro 16″, macOS 15.5
Finder menu > Settings > General tab, make sure the box to show external disks is ticked (in the Sidebar tab, too, if you like).
Go to Finder, hit Settings (or Preferences on older macOS), open the General tab and check “External disks.” If you also want it in the sidebar, tick it in the Sidebar tab too. That’ll bring the drive icon back on your desktop
