Two days ago as I was on my M1 Mac Mini running Sequoia, I got an alert that the hard drive was full.
I deleted about 12 GB of unused applications. Then yesterday my disk was full again.
I went to Settings > General > Storage and saw that my System Data (278.32 GB) is taking up more than half of my hard drive space.
Is there a safe way to reduce that?

No
System Data is technically System/Volume/Data
With a mount point of System as per image below
There is No Safe Way to reduce it
You may consider Both the suggestions by my colleagues when moving forwards with this issue

When is the last time that you:
backed up to time machine
restarted the device
emptied your browser caches
etc.

As already referenced in another discussion you may have to erase and reinstall all (start over) to reduce that system data number. I have done that on several macs with success.
