How can I recover JPEG photos from Messages sent from Google Pixel?

Hello, so I'm trying to recover photos my dad sent me years ago when I had a Google Pixel, and I thought they were backed up to Google Photos. When scrolling for the conversation with the photos, it seems that I cannot download them and save them. They're shown as JPEG, but there's no option for me to download them. Does anyone know how to recover these photos?
