Just installed skim as it seemed easier to mark on pdfs. But am not able to open files that i have stored on my desktop. But i am able to open files that are stores in /users/shared.
After i put it in users/shared it opens

Never heard of your "SkIm" to say more...
There are many PDFeditors to choose from. If this is a new issue I would compare your results with an alternative...
