How to use Find My app to locate missing AirPods?

I left my airpods behind (lost), but the findmy device is saying that Im near it, but it’s not there. But it continues to update saying it is at the location. I figure someone took it, and it is just showing the “last location” but it keeps updating. Any explanation?
