Upgrading iCloud from 50GB to 2TB with Family Sharing

I’m currently subscribed to the iCloud 50GB plan, and I’d like to upgrade to the 2TB plan and add my family. Should I cancel my current plan and then subscribe to the 2TB plan, or is it enough to simply upgrade and then add my family?
