Hard Drives crash on Macbook sleep mode

Whenever I close the laptop or put Macbook Pro into sleep mode overnight, I wake up to find error messages for improper shutdown of all of the external drives. Is this harming the drives and is there a way to keep them connected while the computer sleeps?
