Time machine restore fails to mount (but works directly on the system)

What protocol do you use to connect to the NAS? If it uses AFP, failing to be able to restore as a common problem with that protocol because the NAS isn’t actually using Apple’s AFP protocol.

If it is using SMB, then I would contact both Apple support and the NAS manufacturer for help.
