Missing old contacts on iPhone 13 Pro Max and MacBook Air

I have an iPhone 13 Pro Max, up-to-date IOS, and a new MacBook Air (and an older MacBook Pro). I recently noticed that some of my contacts are missing. People from a long time ago for whom I know I had contact information. Now I am concerned, because this has happened before, but not so many at one time that raised a red flag. How can I compare my current contacts to an older version (going far back)? And how is it possible that you can lose contacts like this? I have not deleted them, intentionally or accidentally. TIA

I'm just guessing here, but I suspect that you have more than one Contact list on one of the older devices. On your iPhone open the Contacts app. Tap Lists (upper left). Does it show more than one source? If so, tap on them one at a time (tap on Lists to go back) and see if any of the "Older" and missing contacts appear. If not, try the same thing on the MacBook Pro...
