Unable to open MS Office files from recents on 2021 MacBook Pro with macOS Sequoia 15.5

Can't recall when this problem started. All I know is that I need to open these Microsoft Office files from Finder.

What you might try is from within Word, go to File menu, Open recent, select MORE. Then if you see the document you need, right click and choose "Show in Finder". This will help locate the file for you.

As a side note, Update your office to the latest version. Currently is 16.100. Also, and perhaps more importantly,

update Sequoia to the latest version of: 15.6.
