I’d like to view the messages content stored in iCloud and delete those I no longer need. I’m sure I don’t need most of them, but don’t want to simply delete them all.

Thank you for your time and effort. I posted the question, then read replies to a similar question: of course the answer was there, too easy. I hadn’t realised that I could see the total message content simply by viewing a message. And I remain slightly confused about messages in iCloud. My phone has an error message, not enough space to backup. Looking at the iCloud usage, messages take up space, so they’re there, but I now know I just read through on my phone, delete or keep. Voila! But thanks for your help, very kind.
If you don’t use iCloud for Messages, iCloud backups include those messages.

And remember, even if you delete the messages, they will remain in “Recently Deleted” for a while, therefore continuing to occupy backup space.
