Why do photos export from photos as heic? How do I export photos as jpg?

I want to save photos to a folder in icloud but the photos are exported with heic extension. I want to export photos as jpgs so I can upload them later to my website. Heic extension is not recognised.

iPad, iPadOS 18

It sounds like you’re running into the default format Photos uses. On Apple devices, photos are often saved as HEIC because the file size is smaller without losing quality, but some sites and apps don’t support it. On a Mac, you can export them as JPEG by selecting the photos in the Photos app, going to File > Export > Export [number] Photos, choosing “JPEG” in the Photo Kind dropdown, and saving them where you want. On an iPhone or iPad, if you’d like all new photos to save as JPEG going forward, go to Settings > Camera > Formats and choose “Most Compatible.” For older HEIC images, you can share them to yourself via Mail or AirDrop to a Mac that’s set to convert to JPEG, or use the Files app with a photo editing app to convert them. That way, they’ll be ready for your website without compatibility issues.

Too bad-- HEIC is a more modern and more efficient way to transfer images.

It's not clear what you mean by "save photos to a folder in icloud." iCloud Drive has folders-- is that what you mean? Or are you saving these pictures to the Files app in your iPad? Or are you using Safari to upload them directly to a web site? What exactly are you wanting to do?

If you want to save the picture to Files or to iCloud Drive, then you select the picture, choose Share

and then, at the top of the dialog, pick "Options."

In the new menu

Check "Most Compatible." Automatic sends HEIC if it sees that the receiving system can use it.

If you're not familiar with the Options menu, check out other choices. For instance, you can choose whether to send or exclude extra metadata with your picture.
