How do I startup my MacBook Pro without logging in with username and password?

Want to be able to startup my MacBook Pro (MacOS Sequoia 15.6) without logging in with username and password

On my MacBook Pro 16" 2021, even before the current operating system, I am required to enter username and password at the status screen. On my Wife's MacBook Air that isn't required.

For the life of me I cannot locate the System feature that governs this startup security feature and toggle it off.

I know I'm missing something simple and obvious.

Please help point me in the right direction. To the right setting to turn off this security feature. My MacBook Pro is used only by me in a home office and does not require such user security.

THanks

Sorry for the upside down image of the screen I am speaking about - and the dusty keyboard. I just cleaned it off.

Your description sounds like you have FileVault enabled. If you try to enable automatic login as others have described and it’s not available then you have enabled FileVault and you need to disable that to have automatic login.

There are a few instances where Touch ID will not be accepted by macOS:

• If you restarted your Mac, or if you're not logged into your user account.

• If you have not unlocked your Mac for 48 hours.

• If you are trying to unlock Security & Privacy

• If you are trying to unlock Users & Groups Settings (when FileVault is on)

• If 5 wrong fingerprint attempts

In System Settings > Users & Groups, there is an option to "Automatically log in as:"

Be sure not to forget your password. Even if you set the system to automatically log you in on startup, you may need to know the password of an Admin account for tasks like installing new applications where the Mac wants to check that you have the right to do something that requires elevated privileges.

Hello Steven Weinberg1!

Here's how to change the login window to show your username, so you just have to click your name and enter the password:

  1. Click the Apple menu  in the top-left corner of your screen.
  2. Go to System Settings
  3. In the sidebar, click on Users & Groups.
  4. If the settings are locked, click the lock icon at the bottom and enter your administrator password.
  5. Click the "i" icon next to your user account.
  6. Look for a setting that says "Display login window as:" and change it to "List of users" instead of "Name and password."

Hope this helps, have a nice day!

Thank you for your replies. Indeed I can turn on automatic login.

But when /I went to do it I got the following screen and realized that I did not want to disable those viable ad convenient functions. So I will continue punch in my password manually at login.

Very smart security measure on Apple's part, no?

But again, thank you for your replies.
