How do I find what iCloud backups are available for an iPhone?

Hello all,

My elderly neighbour has somehow managed to delete the entire contacts list on her iPhone, and she asked me to assist her.

My idea is to restore her iPhone to an iCloud backup that was done before she 'tapped on the wrong thing' a few days ago and lost all her contacts. So restoring from the phone's most recent backup will be of no use.

Before I start the restore-from-backup procedure, which I believe involves doing a factory reset, is there any way of finding a list of iCloud backups available to her iPhone from which to restore it?

As a possible alternative strategy, she also has an iPad, and I assume that her contacts will still be intact on that. Is there any way to transfer them between the two devices?

TIA.

I think, if there's a list of backups for a single device, that it appears after you've reset the phone. That's the implication of the quote. The step before that included resetting the phone. I wasn't willing to go that far for a test…

I have been doing a bit of thinking about what she might have done to 'delete' her contacts, and it will have to have been something very easy to do, and I don't think deleting them is all that easy.
So I am hoping that perhaps she has just accidentally tapped '< Lists' in the top left corner of her contacts, doing which sort of makes it look like all the contacts have gone... If that theory is right,

Then you'll look like a genius for not so much work. Good Plan! (Don't forget to scowl and cuss and go "Grrr," a lot to get plenty of sympathy and appreciation. If you pull if off, you might get cookies!

The vcf file is a good alternative, just in case.

I've only used the backup when I've bought a new phone, so I don't know much. When I go here:

Settings>[name]>iCloud>iCloud Backup>"All Device Backups:>

it lists backups for my iPhone and my iPad, and on different dates. Neither is today.

When I read this:

Restore your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch from a backup - Apple Support

It says

Choose a backup. Look at the date and size of each and pick the most relevant. After you choose a backup, the transfer starts. If a message says that a newer version of software is required, follow the onscreen steps to update.

Which I take to mean I can choose from the backups.

But the thing is, what do you have to lose? If the only backup is from after the loss, then you'll just be back where you started, but with a little more experience. I mean, what else are you gonna do?

Well, there's this: You can export a contact list:

Export contacts on iPhone - Apple Support

You get a vcf file.

You can import a vcf file:

Import contacts on iPhone - Apple Support

What will you try first?

Richard,

Thanks for taking the time to respond so fully.

You are right about having nothing to lose of course, but I was just trying to do some prep in advance of the attempt.

As it happens, although she said she was coming with her phone today, she has called off so I haven't had to do anything yet.

I have tried your suggestion on my own iPhone, but when I go Settings>[name]>iCloud>iCloud Backup>"All Device Backups:> I do not get a list of backups at all, just details of the last one that was done. It was not finding that list that prompted me to post the question.

If that theory is right, then getting them back will be extremely simple, by just tapping 'All iCloud'. But I won't know until she turns up.

Thanks again.
