Physically removing the drive from the computer might be one option.
If this is a "decade old" MacBook Pro, we're probably talking about one of the Retina models that did not have an internal hard drive, but that did have an internal "circuit board stick" SSD. I believe that Apple started soldering in the SSDs in 2018 (when MBPs got the T2 security chip), but that your MBP is old enough to have a removable one.
OWC sells aftermarket upgrade SSDs for those old Macs – and the installation videos on their site might be useful for showing you how to disassemble your Mac and find and remove the SSD. You could then put that in some safe place and send the rest of the MBP off to be recycled.

?
You neglect to say what exact MacBookPro are you talking about...?
There are/have been to date 63 different models of MBP... and as you might imagine, they are not all the same.
If 2015 is the year then as posted above the solid state drive can be removed easy enough and incapacitated if that is the goal.

You don’t. Your only option would be to disassemble the MacBook, remove the storage unit (HDD or SSD) and destroy it. Why would you think you could wipe a computer that won’t turn on?

I often use the bigger hammer method. Wear safety glasses if going this route.
