My phone slipped and slightly broke the black plastic bit (bezel??). My laptop is not under warranty and I would have to pay out of my own pocket it to fix it which I would rather not do. Will this cause further problems and can I do anything myself to fix it?

If it hasn't already caused a problem, then I believe it may not be a problem in the future. Consider yourself lucky.
If something further does come of it, then the potential fix may well be to replace the screen assembly. Not inexpensive. Also not without risk of doing other damage to the computer if you try to fix it yourself.
Think of it like the scratch that your car gets in the grocery store parking lot when an errant cart hits it. The damage is done. Now you get to live with it.
