Sounds like a scam where criminals are using the threat of a bogus $999 charge to get you to speak to them. A criminal, pretending to be a "customer service representative", would collect information about your credit card or bank account that would be used to rip you off. Your financial information might also be sold to other criminals.
Hang up and don't give them anything.
The scammer with phone number 1 (***) ***-**** in Los Angeles, CA left the exactly same message on my iPhone on 10/15/2025.

Scams like this get sent in the thousands probably millions this time of year. Scams are a percentage game. Even if 1/10 of a thousand texts or emails fall for the scam, that’s still an easy 10 victims and $1,000’s of dollars lost to scammers.
I got the exact same voicemail today. I think that confirms it's a scam

Just received the exact same message this morning. It was in my Voicemail. I don't answer for unrecognized numbers, so it went right to VM. Total scam and these comments confirm it.
Same exact message. Annoyingly, and possibly relevant to LE & Apple, I *did* recently purchase an iPhone for approximately that amount. IDK how the perps knew that, but the calls did not start until just after the phone arrived.
I got this very same message this morning, so I Googled for more info and it led me to this thread. I suspected it was fake and blocked the number, but now this thread just proved to me that it is indeed a scam. I am beyond sick of these people taking advantage of others’ suffering. It’s like they have nothing better to do with their time. Normally, I would say “stop stealing from innocent people and get a freaking job,” but I know that right now, that’s much easier said than done.

The call screening feature in iOS 26 is awesome. I don't get this nonsense nearly as often.
