Important: If you’re using a Gmail, Hotmail, MSN, or Outlook email address as your Apple ID

Before proceeding with certain actions (like resetting, changing Apple ID, or preparing your device for someone else), it’s essential to sign out of your Apple ID. Here’s how to do it:

Step-by-step: How to Sign Out of Your Apple ID

  1. Open the Settings app on your iPhone or iPad.
  2. Tap on your name at the top (this opens your Apple ID settings).
  3. Scroll all the way down and tap Sign Out.

Can’t Sign Out? “Sign Out” is Greyed Out?

If the Sign Out button is greyed out or unresponsive, it usually means Screen Time restrictions are active.

To disable Screen Time and allow sign out:

  1. Go to Settings > Screen Time.
  2. Tap Turn Off Screen Time.
  3. If prompted, enter the Screen Time passcode (this is different from your device passcode, if set).

Once Screen Time is disabled, return to:

Settings > [Your Name] > scroll down > Sign Out

— and the option should now be available.

Always ensure you’re signed out of your Apple ID before giving away, trading, or resetting your device. This removes Activation Lock and ensures the next user can set up the device properly.
