iPad (iPadOS 18.5) will not charge when battery temperature drops below +11ºC

I upgraded my 8 year old iPad Pro to a iPad Air M3 running iPadOS 18.5 (now 18.6). When the new iPad’s ambient battery temperature falls below +11ºC it will not charge.

According to the Battery’s Settings screen, the charging is paused with the following message:

“Charging was on hold due to iPad temperature“

It will resume charging when the battery’s temperature reaches 13ºC.

The problem is that all Apple’s public relevant documentation state that the operating temperature is 0º - 35ºC for the iPad, this includes the charging of the iPad.

Again relevant Support Temperature related Documentation/Articles also recommends the iPad is operated in within the 0º - 35ºC range & if the device is operated outside this range then it will stop/pause charging. I have been trying to charge my new iPad when the Battery Temperature falls below +11ºC which is clearly within the supported operational temperature range.

I live in Australia and our Winter season is June to August and where I live the overnight outside temperature can fall as low as -2ºC, this is obviously relevant to this issue. The lowest “Battery Temperature recorded in the Analytics Log I have collected is +5ºC.

I opened a case with Apple Support and went through all the preliminary action steps one would expect when isolating & resolving a charging issue and then some. Eventually I was assigned a contact within Apple Care & the issue was escalated to the Apple Site Support Engineers. Their response was basically FAD, (Functions As Designed) & that for the iPad the charging Temperature Threshold is around 15º. Apple does not provide/send written responses so I am paraphrasing what my Apple Care Rep read out. Clearly this response is unacceptable to me & flys in the face of Apple’s own related documentation. It also does not represent my own experience with my 8 year old iPad Pro, which could not be upgraded to iPadOS 18.x.

I expect to use & reliably CHARGE my iPad at anytime or anyway I need or want, when the ambient temperature & other required parameters are within the operating environmental specifications and so should you!  I have included a couple of screenshots that show some supporting information that could help you to isolate the issue if you experience similar issues. The 1st is a screenshot of filtered data sourced from the Analytics Logs, the 2nd shows the battery status with error message and the timeline where the charge was attempted & paused. Also if you are interested in more details & the history of this issue refer to my previous post “Unable to Schedule Charge my M3 iPad Air

I always operate the iPad within the Operational Environmental Specifications for the product. And as I stated, the “answer” is unacceptable as the 15º threshold is on the edge of the “Goldilocks Zone” of 15 - 20ºC. Any Consumer Product like an iPad should be fully functional & operational within its stated & documented Operational Environmental Specifications not just the Goldilocks Zone.
