Game mode being enabled altering mouse movements

I’ve got a unique situation. I play a Steam game that requires programming, and I noticed something odd with macOS Game Mode. When it’s enabled, the mouse inputs I send through an external circuit board aren’t as accurate as they should be. With Game Mode off, the movements are accurate, but the overall experience isn’t as good. So it seems safe to assume Game Mode is altering or limiting my mouse movements in some way.

I’m trying to figure out what exactly Game Mode does to mouse input compared to when it’s off. The game also requires a regular mouse to stay connected, so it’s almost like I’m using two mouse input devices at once — though I doubt that’s the root cause. Has anyone looked into how Game Mode actually handles mouse movement, and if there’s a way to keep the benefits of having it on without sacrificing input accuracy?

I’ve cleaned up the post so it should be easier to read now — I was on autopilot after a full day of programming, haha. I already reached out to Steam support, and they confirmed it’s a Mac-specific issue. I’ll make sure not to rush future posts and provide more context. This is my first time posting here. (This issue occurs on all Games when Game mode is enabled)

Here’s how I’ve got things set up: my main mouse is a Bluetooth wireless mouse connected to my Mac, and at the same time, I have an Arduino Leonardo plugged in via USB. Both are recognized as mouse devices by the computer. The issue is that when the Arduino sends mouse inputs, the movements aren’t accurate — but this only happens when Game Mode is enabled. I even tested it with just the Arduino Leonardo connected (no wireless mouse), and the problem still occurs. That makes me think it’s not an Arduino issue but something Game Mode is doing. Sorry if things are coming across as a bit confusing this is also my steam game I am working on for helping people learn electrical engineering whilst applying a game styled way of learning :D

Everything works fine without the Arduino, and the regular Bluetooth mouse performs perfectly regardless of Game Mode. That said, I’ve come across a few threads where people reported the same issue even with standard mice, so it might just come down to luck. I’m planning to test a workaround that involves using a USB host shield and a CH340 modification on my Arduino Leonardo, but it’s a major inconvenience for what seems to be an OS-level issue with how mouse input devices are handled.

It’s for a Steam game I’m developing to help teach programming within electrical engineering, and this issue has been a real setback. If you check my earlier posts, you’ll see the full context. I plan to experiment with a BLE library on the Arduino, but I’m still convinced the problem comes from Game Mode altering how mouse inputs are handled. As I mentioned, when Game Mode is off, the Arduino’s mouse inputs are accurate — which strongly suggests Game Mode is the cause. I’ll look elsewhere for support and see if Apple has ever clarified what Game Mode actually does beyond just prioritizing resources for the game.

Unfortunately Apple doesn't disclose the lower level details of anything. At best the information available will be whatever is contained within Apple's developer documentation. Perhaps if you are part of the Apple developer program you may have an option to report the issue (or maybe not especially if you are an independent or small developer).

Even if you are able to report or file a bug report with Apple, it is doubtful Apple will even worry about it unless/until it shows up in other more main line areas.

FYI, it is extremely difficult to impossible to contact Apple in any meaningful way.

Perhaps you can find a more technical forum which may have people who specialize in such lower level development. You may even want to try in the Apple Developer Forums (it is hit or miss with the latter though).

Just adding to this --- I had game mode on for multiple games. For the last few months I've been having mouse/keyboard issues with World of Warcraft. Every 2-5 minutes, while full screen in the game, the mouse and keyboard would start causing erratic movements in the game. My character would start turning or running without me touching the mouse or keyboard.

I could not figure it out. I bought a new mouse and keyboard, I bought a new thunderbolt hub thinking it was that. Nothing worked.

I found a reddit post with someone having the same issue and they said turning off "game mode" solved their issue and BOOM, it solved it. Hundreds of dollars later and it was the buggy game mode. Which I will never, ever, turn on again. So people saying it's steam or your game are wrong.

I think you may have missed the part of the original post were the OP said that Game Mode was off.
