Meaning of colored circles in shared location on iPhone
when looking at my friends location when sharing , what do the colored circles like grey, purple, green with black dots in them mean?

Those are all establishments with Apple Maps, which appear when you have the “Explore” Map chosen. It appears that is a school and a church, indicated by the different dots. You can tap on them for more information.
