Macbook charge to full on unplug every time!

I bough the latest Macbook Air M4 within a week of release. It is mostly plugged in probably 99% of the time. It has not "learned" my charging habits. If I even accidentally unplug the magsafe and replug it in, it will say "charging to full at XX:XX". So it goes to 100%, then it will drop back to 80%. So that is 1/5th charge cycle everytime I unplug my macbook air. I have verified this in system behavior I have 20+ charge cycles on a macbook that is plugged in 99% of the time!!!!!!

This is unacceptable!

I am bought into the macbook ecosystem, I have a M2 pro MAX also bought on release and it is ALWAYS plugged in, TBH I use it more like a Mac Mini. And it has only 13 charge cycles in 2 years!

Please fix this, everytime I unplug my macbook air I feel like i'm burning money. It should have the option like my iphone 16, keep charge at 80%. And eve that thing will eventually disobey and cahrge to 100% on its own.

Then turn off Optimized charging. Your Mac is not going to overcharge when it reaches 100%. Yes your Mac will charge to 100% after every unplug and when using Optimized Charging will drop back down to 80%. That is the expected behavior of Optimized Charging, so turn it off and it will not do it again. You have the choice of using either setting, so choose whichever one you prefer.

If you are looking for a Charge Limit feature, similar to that on an iPhone, then send feedback to Apple here. Note that even on your phone, when using the Charge Limit, it will still charge to 100% on occasion.

The Mac will learn your charging habits if you have optimized charging active. My two MBPs (an M1 Pro and an M4 Pro both switch between charging to 80% and charging to full depending on my usage.

Apple states the battery should last up to 1000 cycles. That ‘up to’ is important because cycle count isn’t all that matters…time matters, too. The Li-based battery will last for 5-7 years and then the capacity begins to decline significantly, even with only a few cycles on the battery.

So really, you’re burning money whether you unplug or not.

There are 3rd party apps that let you control that. Personally, I think they’re useless. Don’t micromanage. Plug in when convenient, run on battery when you can’t run on AC. Done.
