Risk of buying a second-hand iPad with unpaid installments

Hi!

I found a great deal online for the newest iPad, and everything seems legit — original packaging, proof of purchase, unused accessories, etc.

However, the seller mentioned that the device was bought on instalments, and I’m not sure if it has been fully paid off yet.

Is it risky to buy a device like this? Could it get locked later on? Would you recommend buying it?

If the iPad was purchased from a Cellular Provider, this iPad is likely to be subsidy-locked to that carrier - which will inhibit use of the cellular capabilities with any other Cellular network. While subsidy-locks can be removed by the original Provider, any outstanding payments must be paid in addition to a small unlocking fee.

As described, if there is any outstanding finance or contract payments, the seller may not actually own the iPad. If you have any doubt whatsoever, you would be well advised to walk away!
