Apple Devices on Windows 11 bricked iPad when updating iPadOS 18.5 to 18.6

Hi,

You need to take a profound look at the Win 11 app Apple Devices, because it can cause serious problems.

All Sw on Lenovo T480s (i7 running Win 11) was updated. Apple Devices too: 1.1284.24577.0

iPad 8th gen with iPadOS 18.5

It recognised iPad ok, saved a backup and downloaded iPadOS 18.6 (seemingly) ok. But update of my iPad 8th gen failed miserably. I could not with several attempts complete the update or even recover the iPad and it could not boot at all after first failed update, but ended in Recovery mode loop. It gave a vague message saying basically update failed for unknown reasons – the error codes varied, for example : ”(1109) 06B4.0000”

Tried using two different cables, one good quality 3rd party USB-A to Lightning 3rd part AND one genuine

Apple ditto. Same behaviour. Also used a second T480s to see if it was the pc, but that gave same results.

Eventually I managed to borrow an old PC (Asus) with Win10 and iTunes – that one did recover the iPad.

Now I'm not sure I want to try updating my phone after all this, is it actually tested? The current wisdom I thought was that updates using computer is less error prone than OTA...

Best regards, KM

The standard OTA update from device settings is very reliable - and for the vast majority of users is painless and error free. It is generally only necessary to resort to using a Windows PC or Mac computer to restore (recover) an unresponsive iOS/iPadOS device.

It is generally recommended that the device is kept connected to its Power Adapter throughout the update process - as this will ensure that:

a) sufficient power remains available while the update is installed, avoiding the possibility of a battery in poor health being unable to meet peak power demands during the update process.

b) the WiFi connection remains active throughout the update process - as the device will often perform an iCloud backup and/or temporarily offload Apps or data if insufficient device-storage is available to download/unpack/verify the update package.

Try using a different cable and/or USB port; if your computer has both USB-C and USB Type-A ports, try a Type-A port in preference to USB-C.
