Always download everything to your computer and keep multiple backup copies on local storage. iCloud services are a convenience but Apple says in multiple places that you should always keep a copy of your files locally. Note that this doesn't apply to music you have not purchased but are simply listening to using the Apple Music subscription service. If the subscription should end (e.g., your wife forgets to pay her bill), you will lose all content that relies upon that subscription.

Purchased music should not be lost, as it was purchased and is registered to your Apple Account and can always be re-downloaded from there.

Anything downloaded from the Apple Music subscription service will go away if you cancel the subscription, but this should not be necessary, as once added to the Family Group your subscription will be automatically migrated to the Family Sharing subscription. You don't need to cancel it. And no music should be lost.
