though mind you macs do not have a gps so it will have to rely on being connected to a wifi network where the router knows it's location, and of cause it would need internet access to provide your account with the said location.
First, Find My must have already been enabled. If the device wasn't already enabled you won't be able to use Find My to locate the Mac (or laptop or tablet). And the device needs to be online in order to be located. If it's not online it may not be found or you may only see its last known location.
Assuming that Find My was enabled, you could log on to your mom's iCloud account and use Find My there.
