Request for Clarification: WhatsApp’s Authority to Delete Data from iCloud Backup

Hi Apple Community,

I’m seeking urgent help and clarification regarding a serious issue I experienced with WhatsApp and iCloud.

Recently, my iPhone 16 Pro Max developed a USB-C charging port issue. When I took it to the Apple Store for repair, I was advised to erase all content and reset the device before handing it over.

I made sure to back up all my data to iCloud, including WhatsApp (which showed a backup size of 34.67 GB). However, since WhatsApp has no standard sign-out feature, I chose to delete my WhatsApp number as a security precaution before resetting the device.

To my surprise, deleting the number also completely deleted my WhatsApp iCloud backup — without any clear or strongly visible warning. The message about the iCloud backup deletion was minor and very easy to miss. Now, years of important personal and professional data are gone.

Here’s my main concern:

Why does WhatsApp, a third-party app, have the authority to delete data stored in my iCloud account?

This backup was stored within Apple’s cloud infrastructure, under my Apple ID. It is my data- not WhatsApp’s - and should not be deleted by a third-party app without clear, informed consent from the user.

I would sincerely appreciate if someone from Apple or the community could help clarify the following:

  • How WhatsApp is allowed to trigger deletion of data in iCloud.
  • Whether Apple has any backup, redundancy, or logs where this data might still exist.
  • If there is any possible way to recover this lost WhatsApp backup.
  • Whether Apple plans to improve safeguards or user warnings to prevent this from happening to others.

Thank you for your attention and support. I hope there’s a way forward.

Warm regards,

Firos

Why? You were already resetting the device, this was unnecessary and you chose to do it without researching any potential consequences.

• How WhatsApp is allowed to trigger deletion of data in iCloud.

They are not. WhatsApp has no access to data on your iCloud account or in the sealed backup. The WhatsApp data should still be there, but since you deleted your account with them, you severed any and all ties to that data for WhatsApp to access. Your new account with them is no longer tied to that data so it cannot be accessed.

• Whether Apple has any backup, redundancy, or logs where this data might still exist.

The data is still there as mentioned, but WhatsApp is apparently unable to access it. Apple has no access to your encrypted data on your iCloud account to give to WhatsApp. They cannot access your account as that would be an egregious breach of privacy.

• If there is any possible way to recover this lost WhatsApp backup.

That would need to be asked directly of WhatsApp support. Only they can know whether they can still access the data in the backup or not if provided in some way. It's possible you could access the backup via a third party app and retrieve the WhatsApp data, and then it would be up to WhatsApp to incorporate it into your new account.

• Whether Apple plans to improve safeguards or user warnings to prevent this from happening to others.

Apple has no bearing here. You alone deleted your WhatsApp account for no apparent reason. Deleting the app or simply erasing the Phone as instructed was all you needed to do. Apple is not your babysitter and cannot stop you form doing dumb things on your devices, ands cannot be held accountable for your actions. This is unfortunately all on your actions not Apple's lack of confirmation. You were deleting an account on a 3rd party service.

Contact WhatsApp for any assistance with your account and data:

For additional information about your questions:

  • I assume by deleting your phone number with WhatsApp, you deleted your account and as WhatsApp says, that will delete any Chat History backup.

Delete your WhatsApp message history backup.

  • The warning you saw about your iCloud data being deleted was provided by WhatsApp, so if you feel that it should be a more prominent warning, then that would need to come from WhatsApp. The app developer has control over the data that their app stores on your device.
  • Once your Chat History is deleted on your device, any future iCloud backup will overwrite the previous one leaving it without your Chat History. This backup likely occurred when you reset your device, so it could be restored exactly like it was, and that would be without your Chat History.
  • Apple does not have any logs or redundancy with iCloud backups as each backup overwrites the previous one. If you want to maintain several versions of your backup, that would need to be done with a computer instead of iCloud. In that case you could choose which backup you want to use to restore your data.
