When I touch the DDG icon to load it, it immediately reverts to the icon page.
I am fed up with reading people’s complaints and finding no remedy so I am thinking of getting rid of the iPad and choosing a more user friendly tablet

Check for an update to the DDG app in the App Store. You can also delete the app and redownload it from the App Store. It is the app developer that would have to fix an issue with their app not launching, Apple cannot do that for them.
As for a tablet choice, that is up to you and if your iPad is not able to update beyond iPadOS 17, it may be a good time to make that decision.

Believe it or not, this has nothing to do with Apple. It is a problem with the app.

If that doesn’t fix it, delete the app, restart your iPad, and reinstall the app.
