Photos not import a standard jpeg image, even though all other apps on my MacBook Pro can use it

Photos version 10.0 will not import a standard jpeg image, even though all other apps on my MacBook Pro can use it.

MacOS Sequoia 15.5 just bought July, 2015. Every app I have tried on this Mac and and other Os, Windows or Mac for the last 15+ years handles this file. The extension is .jpg but I changed it to .jpeg. And that did not work either. Reason given is Unknown Error.

It works out that by just closing Photos and relaunching it, it now works with the file.

Follow what Matti says! Is your Library on an external drive?

If the pictures load in Preview (or other editors,) then export them as a jpgs, and see if the new file works in Photos.

Also, have you used apps like "Mac Cleaners" or other system-adjusting software, like virus checkers or VPNs? Many of those can really mess up a Photos Library.

And, to narrow things down, try these steps:

  • Restart the computer (of course)
  • Re-start in Safe Mode. This bypasses certain potentially disruptive processes, and it often helps. Safe Mode is different for different computers, so see this:

Then try these:

  • Use another library if you have one, or make a small test Library with a few pictures in it and see if the same thing happens. You can create a new Library by closing Photos and then option-clicking on the Photos icon.
  • Make a new user and see if the same problem recurs with it. This is a bit harder, because a new user can't access a different user's stuff. You would need to move your Library out of your own user's folder up to the general "Users" folder.
  • Rebuild your Photos Library--close Photos and re-launch by option-command-clicking the app icon. If you use iCloud Photos, this may cause a long re-syncing of the Library.

The idea is to find out if the problem is with the Library, with your account, or with caches and login items, and stuff like that. One of these steps may fix the problem, but their failure to work also helps figure out what's happening.

Let us know what happens…

Sounds weird. Notice that sometimes the file extension/suffix might be wrong which might explain this (you can check the image codec via Preview.app's Inspector). For example, recently in other site a user complained why Mac users could not open .jpg images after his server had their extension changed to .data.

Notice also that Photos might not import images/movies if its library is not stored on APFS or MacOS Extended volume. Non-Mac formats like exFAT and network and cloud shares are not supported and might very well corrupt the library.
