Itunes sync with Iphone mini 12

I am using an old IOS for the original Itunes. I have iPhone mini 12 and have been synching with my mac for many years so I'm able to update my songs and most important - view play counts. Ever since I opted for 'sync over wifi' a few days ago, I can no longer sync via the lead. I switched of wifi sync and reverted back to lead to fix that as wifi sync did not work.

I am using ITunes 12.8.3.1, my mac is macOS High Sierra 10.13.6

I activated an apple music trial recently but am still seeing data beyond that syncing. Not sure if thats an issue.

I've had my play counts for 20 years so I'd be so happy if I could get this sorted. If anyone could help i'd be very grateful.

Did you turn on the "Sync Library" option on the iPhone in Settings ➜ Apps ➜ Music? If so, you need to turn it off, as that option prevents direct syncing over USB as unintuitive as that may seem.

If it is not turned on, then tell us what happens when you try to sync?

Does the iPhone not appear in iTunes on the Mac?

No I turned on sync over wifi via iTunes (option 'sync with this iPhone over Wi-Fi'). I plug it in and it does the usual message of 'Syncing "iPhone (9): (Step 2 of 5)' on step 2 promps me to enter passcode then carries on the rest of the steps. It takes quite some time on step 2 (longer than before the error began) then it syncs but no new play count data. I sometimes try playing a song on iphone, re sync, then check if play count data adjusts but it doesnt.

Ive just added a few photos to photos app from the iphone so it recognises it.

Also, make sure iCloud Music library is not turned on on the iPhone.
