Apple's iMessage service is encrypted by default.

For SMS and MMS messages those cannot be encrypted as they are handled by the carrier.


RCS messages to Android devices are not yet encrypted in their implementation but Apple is working with GSMA to encrypt these end to end in a future version.

Text messages via RCS (green) are also not encrypted, though there is work happening with RCS Universal Profile 3.0 to add encryption support. (AFAIK, Apple has not announced plans or schedules for this support.)


Text messages sent via iMessage messages (blue) are encrypted.
