Create Slideshow works as it always has on the Mac, and that gives lots of control and produces nice slideshows.
If you mean specifically on iPad and iPhone "Apple devices," then "Play as Slideshow" is, in the opinion of many of us, nearly useless. We have no control over display, timing, or background music. It can be used as a quick check to see if the pictures we've chosen are really what we meant. But the doubling up of pictures prevents examining their crops and aspect ratios, so it's not very good even as a check.
