I had an iPhone active with my phone number for a day. I switched to Android. Since that time some iPhone users texts don't reach my android phone. I know they are sending as I later see them on my iPad. It's impossible for me to ask every iphone user to text my number and not my Apple ID. How do I fix this? The deregister process says there is no association and I don't have access to the iPhone anymore.

They can either delete and re-add your contact, or sign out of imessage on your ipad.
As long as you have a device that is capable of receiving the iMessage, then that is how it will be sent by the sender. After you sign out of iMessage on your iPad, then when the sender attempts to send an iMessage, it will be sent as a SMS message (if they have your phone number in their contacts) and you will see it on your Android phone. Messages can only be sent as an iMessage or SMS message, not both. If they don't have your phone number and only your Apple Account, it will not be sent at all without a device capable of receiving the iMessage and they will see that on their device as an unsent message.
If I sign out of iMessage on iPad what happens when an iPhone user tried to text me? Would it somehow notify them it's unavailable and hopefully they'd know to select my phone number instead?
