Issues pairing Apple Watch Series 5 to iPhone XR

I recently got a new-to-me series 5 watch. Got it completely charged up before attempting to pair it to m XR. The first attempt started out normally. But it took eons and seemed to be stuck in the pairing mode (I waited five hours before breaking that pairing session.) so I backed out of the pairing and tried again. But this time, the camera method of pairing wouldn’t work, so I tried manually. The 6 digit code will not appear on the watch.

I have tried resetting the watch. I have tried turning both watch and phone off and back on. I have tried the trick where you get to the point where a code is supposed to appear on the watch, and you turn the phone off and back on…but that trick didn’t work.

I’m not sure exactly what I did, but the code did pop up ONCE, so I quickly went into the watch app on phone and entered it. Selected the option to update the watch and continue pairing. About ten minutes later error messages pop up saying the watch could not be paired and to try again.

And this is what the watch looks like, so it is impossible to go into the watch settings.

I am absolutely stumped here. What troubleshooting steps can I try now?
